Cicada ~ Alphabet Crazy

Sharing a photo with Alibb’s Alphabet Cray challenge. I captured these cicada on my sycamore tree. One is only a shell but the other is alive.

Some trivia to share with you if are not familiar with these loud insects.

Cicadas go through three stages of development: egg, nymph and adult. The egg is laid in tree branches and when they hatch they fall to the ground. In the larval stage they are called a nymph and  can live in the ground for many years.

Some nests of cicada larvae live in the ground for 17 years! Then they emerge from the ground and attach to trees, plants, or structures until they sort of pop out of their skin and become an adult.

As an adult, they only live from 2 weeks to 40 days. Now you know the rest of the story.

    • I felt like explaining about the insect in case others were not aware. Turns out that was the case.

Alibb said we are on our own with the alphabet order.

  1. Cicadas are a wonder of nature to me. I’ve always wondered how they can come up exactly in the 17th year. There are also 13-year cicadas. Great pic.
