Calling Telephone Texas and Tightwad Missouri

Hello, Hello, yes, there is a place called Telephone, Texas. This goes back to the 1880s when it was not so simple to have a telephone in your home. This is a tiny community and when it came to naming when it was being established in 1886 no name seemed good enough. Finally, a general store owner who was trying to find a name for the place got frustrated when it seemed that all of the chosen names he submitted to the postal authorities were already names of towns. Since his general store was the only place in the area to have a telephone he suggested that name. It was accepted and the community became known as Telephone.

As for Tightwad, Missouri this little town dates back to the early 20th century. Maybe this little town deserved a better name but as the story goes money was involved. The local mailman in this area had a falling out with the local grocer. While delivering the mail the postman asked the grocer to put a watermelon aside for him. Returning from his mail delivery the postman discovered that the grocer had sold the watermelon to another customer who paid 50 cents more for it. Everyone in the community agreed that the grocer could be considered a tightwad and while for some time the name was unofficial when the village was incorporated in the 1980s the name Tightwad, Missouri stuck.
