Butterfly House

This little blue butterfly house has been on my deck a few years now. I have only seen a few butterflies visit. Mostly wasps and bees. This time of the year when it starts turning cold, I see a lot of wasps. Looking for somewhere to hibernate I suppose. I thought they hibernate until I researched and found this out…

As the weather gets colder and fall arrives, food diminishes and the remaining adult wasps and old queens die off due to starvation. By winter most average size nests have died but occasionally a large nest will survive longer if enough food can be found.

And so it is with nature. The cycle dies off and then rebirth begins again in the spring.

  1. I have seen these butterfly houses on television before. I think they are wonderful ideas. I guess you will get other little creatures in there though to keep warm.

  2. This is the first time I hear about it. I admire those who came up with the idea of a house that can protect butterflies and other insects, it’s something i have never thought about. Beautiful post!

    • I should have added this to the post… Slots in the butterfly houses keep birds out while giving butterflies protection from the wind and weather. Place the butterfly house in your garden and when it gets cool at night the butterflies seek shelter and may use your house.
