One of the things that I built a few years ago for a book I wrote, but then I’ve used it with customers many times now, was a cloud picker. A cloud calculator that lets you enter information about the various cloud providers (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, IBM, and others) and then using a weighting system you then pick the right cloud for your solution. I have been thinking about devices lately in particular cellular phones. There are several things to think about with and while picking the right smartphone for you. So without further adieu, let’s wander through some of the things I would consider in building a device calculator. This is an evolution, so the first iteration isn’t complete!
- I use my cellphone camera all the time
- I would like to watch streaming video on my smartphone
- I need a long battery life
- More than 2 hours of talking a day
- More than 3 hours of talking a day
- More than 4 hours of talking a day
- I am worried about smartphone security
- I have more than ten gigs of music I want to have on my smartphone
- I have more than ten gigs of audiobooks I want to have on my smartphone
The intent isn’t to create more granular measures in this first run. I intend to start building a picture of what people would need. One of the things I have learned is that my needs in the smartphone space aren’t what other people need. The Smartphone of today is the client for many services and can be used in many ways that frankly weren’t things we considered four and five years ago.
I will add some poll questions as I begin to build out a device calculator!

I have a good phone I only have it for the sake of taking pictures … I also have a camera but I don’t use it … with my phone the pictures are no worse … maybe even better
you always have to do what works for you!!!
Plus, the easiest thing is … everything is just set up and the camera needs to be set up already
that is very true and much simpler!
Consumers are creature of habit because more people buy Apple phones, but people like Android phones more.
apple is certainly a distinct choice.
I like my iPhone. There are more androids phones in the world, but many more issues with android today than the iPhone today.

I prefer my apple phone I know I need to update it but don’t want to…I use it sometimes …for photos.
the rush to update phones is always interesting. This fall I didn’t upgrade my iphone by choice. I want the 2020 release that includes a 5g antenna!!!
But I am looking for something different than most folks are!!!
I would like to know why some people object to 5 g?
At this point, there is a rumor that 5g is wholly microwave based. Because of that it cooks people’s brains.
it makes me laugh! Microwaves flow around us all day, every day.
I don’t have a smartphone. I use a desktop PC and I have a regular flip-top phone for communication
i can understand that, it is about what you need!
five and six sound like the same thing to me- they’re both sound files
they are, although unless you have entire LP’s converted to MP3 there is a fairly significant size difference and they are encoded differently.
okay, so there are some meaningful distinctions
yeah there are, it is also interesting from the online (streaming) versus offline (which more often than not is device-specific).
i am a memory hog on my phone, but if you take Audible books and MP3’s off my phone (all legal)! i am still a hog (way too many applications)
honestly, I’d be shocked to hear you pirate anything
you would be right. i stay away from pirated software. if I have it, I paid for it.
if everyone were like you, there’d be no DRM
ah well thank you, very kind!
I do use DRM heavily for documents.
why wouldn’t that be considered encryption?
it is,
i send documents to my customers. I have to encrypt them. but that is their rule.
while there would be overlap between DRM and encryption, they don’t seem interchangeable to me
Both use the concept of known good.
one uses a key.
the other uses an IDM system (mostly).
they are in the same ball park, But i suspect you can find a lot of deltas.
my thoughts echo yours here
Never had an apple phone, so I don’t have an opinion. Camera and battery are some of the more important things to me, as well as security which I forgot about before reading your post. 😀
Security is my life now, i wish I could reach many more people and remind them to be careful. So I guess you are using an android phone?
Yes, I have only used android
cool thanks for the clarification –
i have both (one for work) so I flip back and forth often.
Which one do you like more?
how about this it really depends.
iPhone does much better when it comes to being used in a car.
Android has much better integration with the 4g antenna when you are using it for a long conversation.
so it depends!
I am still learning all of the options I have on my iPhone.
i use mine every day and I am still learning about my phone!!!
I currently use a smartphone for conversations, messaging, taking pictures and occasionally for the web.
that is the core functionality for many people!
more to come in this series!
