You would think a businessman would have more sense. John Hubbard was a businessman in Montpelier, Vermont. He was not a giving man and very stingy with his money. So when it came time to make plans for his passing he figured that it would be wasting money to get a tombstone. Instead, he left money to have an unusual copper sculpture placed near his grave which became known as “Black Agnes”.
Now we all have heard stories about what happens to stingy people like Scrooge. In the case of Scrooge, he had the opportunity to turn his life around. Apparently this did not happen to Hubbard. Once he was in his grave it seems the statue took over. Suddenly local legends came about of the statue having glowing red eyes at night. There could be piercing screams heard. It was said that if anyone tried to sit on the statue’s lap they would be dead in seven days.
What is wrong here is that this is not a statue of a woman instead it is a statue of a man or an androgynous being. This sculpture is called Thanatos which in Greek means death. You can see it at Green Mount Cemetery.

What a nice story even if we know that not all were true.
if you ask me, evil exists only in the minds of humans. ergo, a statue can’t be evil…
I would not sit on the statue but I think it is incredible. And the story is mysterious.
Interesting post Indeed , thanks for sharing
I’m not in the habit of sitting on statues, so I don’t think I would do so on this occasion either!
I have seen quite a few photos where people find it amusing to sit in the laps of statues but in this case, it would be a mistake.
Very interesting post. It made me think.
In these matters I prefer to be an ostrich and bury my head in the sand
we live in a world of seeing, hearing and smelling. There is much beyond that world.
