Our farmers are very hardworking and some are already picking up their first crop of turnips this year. The turnip originates from the northern part of Central Europe and was cultivated from a very early age. It has blue-gray leaves that hug the stem and yellow flowers in light clusters. The fruits are scales. The most important species are summer and stubble beets. The turnips have a pleasant sharp sweet taste and characteristic fibrous meat. Beets contain lots of ballast and protein, fat, carbohydrates, trace elements, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, vitamins B1, B2, C and folic acids. Fresh young turnips can be used from July to September and sour beets throughout the year.
