Beating Stress With a Sniff

Whatever you do I want no laughing and no thoughts of dirty, smelly laundry. This is serious stuff and it’s found to be a fact that the scent of your partner can help lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol even when your partner is not with you.

Opposite-sex couples were used in the study. The men had to wear clean T-shirts for 24 hours, They were told not to use deodorant or other body scents. They had to keep from smoking and eating certain foods. Afterward, the T-shirts were frozen to preserve the scent.

The women were told to choose shirts at random and to sniff them. Then they were given a stress test, filled in a questionnaire and gave saliva samples to measure their cortisol levels.  It was discovered that the women who had sniffed their partner’s shirt were less stressed. Those women who had sniffed their partner’s shirt and identified it as such had the lowest average cortisol levels. It was concluded that a partner’s scent without their physical presence can be a powerful tool to help reduce stress.
