At Christmas Time

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. It is a magical time for children and can be a magical time also for adults if only they would relax and let the fantasies unfold. A lot of people are much too stressed out during this time of the year and they are also spending way too much money which they cannot afford to do.

It’s that time of the year to go back to the basics. Remembering what this time of the year is really all about and that in days gone by no one would spend hundreds of dollars to create their Christmas they would just celebrate it the best they could. Perhaps in these economic times, it’s also time to get back to what once was. Let’s create a fun family time for children and make up a bowl of popcorn and make popcorn strings to hang on the Christmas tree. Forego those expensive decorations when the old-fashioned kind will do as well.

You can bake gingerbread cookies and make some gingerbread men with small holes punched out at the top so you can hang them on the Christmas tree. Your tree will have the wonderful smells of pine, popcorn, and gingerbread. An at-home type of Christmas is what everyone deserves this year. Remember that the old-fashioned values are still those which matter the most. It’s not all about presents and expensive baubles it’s about family, friends, and love. It is about the birth of Jesus.

Even though children nowadays are into so much technical and electronic stuff I fondly remember my childhood. It started at the age of five when I first discovered picture books to the age of 12. I was a real lover of books. Among my favorite pastimes was coloring in coloring books or painting and drawing pictures. I loved stuffed animals and dolls. In the photo, I have gotten a doll as a present that is almost as big as I am.

Of course, there was no computer but I think that children should be encouraged to once again enjoy these simple but very wonderful pastimes. I developed my imagination with the pictures I painted and learned concentration from coloring in my coloring books. I learned that I could transport myself into another world through books where I could even fly. I wonder what a child today would think of getting several books, some coloring books, and a great big 64 pack Crayola crayon box as presents. During these chaotic times and I think children should be encouraged to cut back on computer and TV time.

  1. For me, Christmas is the most beautiful holiday of the year … but it is true that now everything is too commercialized … it was really mostly a family holiday and I still celebrate it so much … in the circle of my loved ones
