Are You A Name Brand Freak or Do You Buy Generic Sometimes?

Do you typically purchase only name brand products?  The name sells it to you or do you find name brand products are just better than off brand or generic products?

To me, it depends on the product.  For instance, I’ve always bought name brand potato chips until recently.  One day as I was shopping at Walmart, they did not have Lays regular potato chips.  They were sold out completely.  So I picked up a bag of Great Value regular potato chips.  We opened them when I got home and were pleasantly surprised.  The chips, while not as good as Lays, were pretty good.  The bag only cost me $1.12 vs. $2.99.  Win.  I have since bought the $1.00 bag of Fritos.  They are exactly the same as the name brand.  They have the skinny ones and the big and fat dip chips.  My next purchase  was the Great Value Crunch Cheetos.  They are my favorite.  And this bag only costs $.82 at the store I shop at.

I will admit that some things are better when you purchase name brand.  Then others, are just as good or better and costs much less.  This led me to the following poll to quiz you guys on your shopping habits.

  1. In some cases there is no difference between name brands and generic. The difference is mainly the label. I visited a salmon packing factory once and we were told that it didn’t matter how expensive a brand you bought it was the same salmon. They packed for generic and and brand names and put on different labels.

    • I weigh the quality of the product first. If it is good and a savings I will buy the generic brand. I have found that some are good, even great and then others are not. It also depends on what you are using the product for in the way of cleaning products or paper products.
