Another Cactus Bloom

Here is another one of my cacti in bloom. I call it the doughnut cactus. It is called Huernia zebrina also called  Owl eyes. This is  low ) is a low growing cactus. It is collected for its odd looking flowers. It flowers abundantly in the tropics all through the year except for a few months in the winter.

It has a glossy wine red raised ring which looks like a glazed doughnut. It has a tiny shiny star like thing in the middle. It is a five petaled flower which have wine colored zebra like stripes on them.

The plant is very similar to the other Huernia I had posted about a couple of days ago. These stunning flowers make up for the lack of leaves or beauty of the plant. I have noticed that this plants turns completely reddish if left  without water or in the direct sun.

Since they are cacti they can go for months without water and still be alive. It is an easy plant to grow and propagate.

  1. We have a “collection” of cactus that we grow ….
they’re great survivals although still some of them died

  2. Although I do not generally like cacti plants, I must admit that this blooming one is very pretty and appealing and as you said that ring looks exactly like a glazed jelly donut. I am usually useless when to comes to plants and or flowers as they always eventually die on me. But now that you mention the fact that a cactus can go without water for a while, maybe I found my new calling and I just might get myself one.

  3. This is a very lovely plant! I love plants in general. Of course, beautiful flowers and those that can be eaten are great. Unfortunately, I don’t have a garden. I spend most of my time working.
