A couple of days ago I posted this photo and asked you to guess what it was a picture of. Here’s the original post if you haven’t chosen your answer yet: https://virily.com/virily_poll/poll-quiz-what-do-you-think-this-is/ The answers given so far break down as follows:
- An insect colony (9 votes) – 39%
- A plant (5 votes) – 22%
- A rock formation (8 votes) – 35%
- Part of a human body (1 votes) – 4%
Well the time to reveal the truth has arrived. And this is a photo of a … plant! It is a Stephania venosa, from Thailand, and that fat bulbous formation is called a caudex, used for storing water. I snapped it in Dublin’s Botanic Garden. Well done to all who got the answer correct, and thanks to all who joined in 😀

Did you guess correctly, that the photo was of a plant?

Yes

No

I would never have guessed because I never thought of a plant
Well, you are not alone, Vida 🙂 Look at the responses to the question above:
Yes (2 votes) – 13%
No (13 votes) – 87%
I have seen this bulbous formation in plants though I can’t recollect when and where. A very nice shot.
Thank you very much, Mohanji 🙂
You are most welcome Norman.
This is a Great think.
Thank you, Radica 🙂
When I opted for parts of a human ………..I said poop assuming it was a macro photo. Never mind. ???
That it is a plant is a shocker
And I really want one for my greenhouse!
That is amazing I would have never thought this was a plant
It’s a pretty amazing looking plant, that’s for sure!
I knew I got it wrong, this was very cool.
As soon as I saw it in the Botanic Gardens, I knew I had the makings of a quiz 🙂
I would never guess it’s a plant, I thought it’s a rock formation.
It’s a really interesting looking plant!
I think I missed that previous post. My answer would have either a rock formation or a plant. As an ex registered nurse, I know it is not a human organ or bone etc. Also even though I enlarged the picture, there was nothing moving either on top or around so it is not an insect. The fact remains that it is an unusual plant. Is it edible?Or consumed by animals and or humans? Questions and questions….
Well, I read that its deep red juice is used in tattooing, and that it is used in Thai folk medicine to treat everything from a common cold to cancer 😮
I don’t think so this is a plant
I am still sad over the whole dinosaur poop thing so i am going to start a boycott of this plant!
lol Dino poop, where was that option?!! Boycott the plant! I agree
It most definitely should have been an option!
consider your plant officially boycotted Mr. Darlington. We will be printing placards and marching in front of said plant as soon as we can get there.
🙂 I am glad you’ve come to the dark side Kim, we have cookies!
Oh good, and can I make my own sign?
yes you may make your own sign!
