American Pie

I was belting out the song at the top of my lungs. I felt like I was in  a safety zone. It seems like in the bathroom, with the door closed, in the shower would be a safe place to just belt it out. I was wrong.

Of course someone came banging on the door to tell me that was a very sad and song and I shouldn’t be singing it with glee. (I was impressed because I didn’t think he knew the word glee.) I really knew nothing about the song, “You mean there was  draught and the levy was dry?”

He puffed “Apparently you need to learn much much  more about the song.

The song was written by Don McLean. It was written many years after a terrible airplane crashed that killed everyone  on board. They were all musicians. Buddy Holly simply wanted to get his laundry done. So he charted a plane to get it done. Willie Nelson gave up his seat so another musician could go.  The song is about that loss of those men, Buddy Holly, JP Richins, Ritchie Valens and the pilot that lost their lives that day.

You probably knew and I learned something new today.

  1. The late Buddy Holly, the late Big Bopper and the late Richie Valens (nee Ricardo Valenzuela) died before I was born. However I have heard disc jockeys on the radio that the death of these three artist was called “The Day The Music Died.” I am thinking “Huh?”
