National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June. Personally I haven’t met a doughnut that I didn’t like. I am sure there are many doughnut fans out there. The spelling is both ways doughnuts and donuts. So that you can be ready to celebrate donut day next year here are some amazing facts about these delicious sweet treats.

  • New England settlers from Hertfordshire in the U.K. brought with them to America a local specialty known as the “Hertfordshire Nut” which was also referred to as the “Dow-Nut”.
  • Yankees had a tradition to celebrate the one thousand barrel of whale oil by frying up doughnuts in the oil.
  • There is an association called the National Dunking Association whose members in the 1940s included such stars of that day like Zero Mostel, Johnny Carson, and Martha Graham.
  • I smile as I write this because it seems so amusing to me. When it came to Mardi Gras time in Vienna, Austria aristocrats would compete for prizes of silver pistols by shooting at flying doughnuts.
  • During wartime Salvation Army volunteers boosted the morale of young soldiers in the trenches by frying up batches of fresh doughnuts for them.
  • Red Cross volunteers put their own lives on the line by driving trucks equipped with doughnut-making machines to the front lines.
  • The reason why the police are associated with doughnuts is that in the 1940s and 1950s when officers worked the graveyard shift there was no place to grab a bite except at a doughnut shop. The habit just stuck.
  • The Salvation Army started National Donut Day in 1938 so they could raise money to build a home for unwed mothers. When someone contributed they received a cardboard doughnut. National Donut Day will come on June 2, 2017.
  • This was a big surprise for me. At one time it was not traditional to bob for apples on Halloween. Instead long before all that Halloween candy made its appearance people celebrated by bobbing for doughnuts hung from a string. Now you have an original idea for your Halloween party this year.
