A quick tutorial on how to open a Durian!!

Well, it’s the durian season again!! Yeay!!

My family loves durian, so it wasn’t a surprise that all over us could open a “ripe-enough” durian.

I’ve seen pastry chef struggle with “chopping open” a durian, but well, you don’t need to chop them open. With the right technique, they can be open easily with a screwdriver or key or even a spoon. But of course, it depends on the level of ripeness and how thick the skin is.

  • First, you’ll need a thick cloth or glove (to protect your hands)

    • Yes
    • No
  • Next, you’ll need to find the “Point of weakness” or the lines that branch out from the base of the durian. Can you find one?

    • Yes
    • No
  • Althoug I’m not 100% sure that all the lines are correct, I’ve full confident that at least 2 of them are…

    • Yes
    • No
  • Next, you use a knife or something sharp and flat to “pry open” one of the line you choosen

    • Yes
    • No
  • It need a little bit of force, and it’ll spilt open at the lines …

    • Yes
    • No
  • The you’ve to use your hands to force them apart …

    • Yes
    • No
  • Enjoy!

    • Yes
    • No
  • Wait there is more! There are still more fruit inside the “compartment” coloured in red.

    • So you could find force it open by pressing on the side (coloured blue)
    • Else, you can try cutting at the edge of the skin (it usually correspond to a line in step 3)
  • There, all the fruits taken out!!

    • Yes
    • No

    • It takes awhile to find the “lines” but with enough tries, it’ll be easy…
even I can’t be 100% percent sure, and have made mistakes…
just have to observe closer to get another line πŸ™‚
