  1. This was a great quiz Norman! I used to sleep heavily when I was in school and then college. But ever since I have started working and have been living on my own, the cycle changed. I used to stay up all night and sleep through major part of the day. But that ruined by health eventually. Now I try to get at least 6-7 hours of nighttime sleep. But it’s mostly disturbed, especially since we have a hot and humid weather here. So sometimes, I put on a soothing instrumental music (like they use in spas) and meditate before falling asleep. That really helps.

    • Thanks for your support, Madhuparna. It seems our cycles change as we move through life. Like you, I used to be a heavy sleeper when young, but the biggest change came for me when I had kids. Suddenly I had to be awake early even at weekends, and when they grew up I found I still woke early. I still wake too early and sleep too late. I will try meditating before sleep, like you, and see if it helps 🙂

    • Major bummer. My father used to use that machine and he claimed it made a big difference to the quality of his sleep, though it looks as uncomfortable as hell. However, I can undersstand, as I suffer badly if sleep-deprived.

  2. I usually stay up till 3 in the A.M. or so….occasionally I’ll go to bed around 10 P.M. I am not a morning person though…I’ll sleep in as late as possible! Maybe it is cause I wake up often through the night.

Great poll on sleep! Very interesting to see how other’s sleep!

  3. So many factors play into getting a night’s sleep. Life is not all tied up in a nice neat package and even with sleep we sometimes have to be flexible. It is important, though, to manage things so we at least get regular rest, including sleep if possible.

  4. Great quiz, Norman! I find that as I get older, I need more sleep but in shorter bursts. So I usually don’t sleep more than 4 hours at a stretch. But I take frequent naps 🙂

    • Thank you, Blue. You are lucky to be able to nap. I find it difficult to, and if I succeed late in the day then my following night’s sleep gets compromised. Something of a vicious circle! ☺

  5. My tip is work hard enough during the day, if you have an office job, do some kind of exercise. Back when we had to hunt and gather, I bet there wasn’t much insomnia. I sleep like a rock, put me in a corner and I can darn near sleep standing up. : )

    • I totally agree about temperature. Hot nights are seldom a problem here, except for maybe a fortnight or so in the summer, but I have a good firm mattress and a support pillow, as I have some arthritis in my neck due to an old injury. I know many will disagree, but I swear by a small amount of beer before bed. I’m talking half a bottle. I think it must be the hops have a soporific effect. It’s not the alcohol, because a glass of wine doesn’t work for me 🙂
