When a lake stratifies, three different layers are formed. The warm surface layer is called the epilimnion. The epilimnion is the layer of water that interacts with wind and sunlight, so it becomes the warmest and contains the most dissolved oxygen.

I only knew that lakes do turn. But that was about it.
