Some Interesting Florida History (1/10)

Henry Flagler was an investor with a vision.  He wanted to extend a railway to the upper Florida Keys all the way to the island of Key West. Even though the non-visionaries thought his idea was folly, he accomplished this engineering feat and in 1912, he made the first trip from Miami to Key West in what is known as the “Overseas Railroad”.  Sadly, there was a hurricane in 1935 and in one day it destroyed 50% of the tracks and infrastructure.  But it wasn’t the hurricane that took out the railway.  It was the internal combustion engine.  Highway US1 was built over the original railroad bridges.  Nowadays people can drive to Key West.
