White storks depend on thermal columns to be able to plan the long distances of annual migrations between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. For many birds the shortest route would take them across the Mediterranean; However, as thermals do not form over water, they generally prefer overland diversion to avoid trans-Mediterranean flights that require prolonged vigorous flutter.
