It is similar to a fashion magazine editorial but on an Ugly Betty character instead of a fashion model. I guess they are trying to promote expensive merchandise to regular people in society.
Her character does look she is trying to hard to look fashionable. She just looks like a wannabe trying to improve her ugly looks.
