WHEN IN ROME (2): A Visit to the Vatican

Further to my recent post WHEN IN ROME… 5 Days of Roman Food I’ll now ask you to accompany me on a visit to the Vatican, the world’s smallest independent state, home to the Pope (although when I called on him, he was away in South America, unfortunately). Please upvote your favourite picture 🙂

Michelangelo's masterpiece, he painted the Sistine chapel ceiling in the early 1500s, and this work is considered a cornerstone of High Renaissance art.

#4 Saint Peter’s Square

The long queue is to enter St Peter's basiilica, which I didn't. I'd just spent hours in the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, having my mind blown, and didn't need any more 🙂

A 360 degree pirouette in the centre of the Vatican's most iconic public space. Whenever you see this place on telly it's thronged with thousands of people, but this chilly January day, there was plenty of space.

  1. Rome is certainly somewhere I would like to visit but never have – I have never been to anywhere in Italy. It looks as though winter is not a bad time to go if the place gets so crowded in summer – mind you, if the St Peter’s queue is that long in January, what on earth must it be like in July?
