What To Do In Pomorie, Bulgaria

Pomorie is a town in southeastern Bulgaria. It is a wonderful place to visit,  located on a narrow rocky peninsula in Burgas Bay on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It was founded by the Ancient Greeks under the name Anchialos, deriving from Ancient Greek “anchi-” (“near, close to”) and “als-” (either “salt” or a poetic and uncommon word for “sea”). However, the earliest evidence of human activity found in Pomorie dates back to the Neolithic Age (6th millennium BC). Pomorie is a popular tourist destination and it provides its guests with many accommodation opportunities. There are also plenty of venues and restaurants in the town. Here are just a few things you can do in Pomorie. All photos are mine.

#1 Enjoy Birdwatching

Via Pontica, the second largest avian migratory route in Europe passes above Pomorie Lake. This is the reason for the great diversity of birds in the region of the lake – a total of 269 bird species (nesting, wintering, migratory, etc.).

#2 Sunset Watching

Since Pomorie is located on a narrow peninsula, you can watch the sun going down over the water at both sunrise and sunset.

  1. I love learning about an area and it’s history. The photos are lovely, and the narrative is interesting Ellie. I don’t know if I will be travelling again in the future because of my health, but I am so glad to know about that area now!

    • Thank you very much Sally, I’m happy you liked it! I also hope you are feeling well! Unfortunately, we can’t visit all the places in the world but we have the internet to lear about them. 🙂

  2. This sounds like a rather interesting place to see. I’m unsure if I’ll ever get to see anything in Europe, but I’d probably be most interested in the geology, botany, and zoology of Bulgaria. I suspect that it is enchanting.
