The city was founded in the 8th century BC. In the 1st century BC was mentioned by Diodorus under the name Eggisos. Ovidi wrote in his “Ex Ponto”, that the then name of the town comes from the name of its founder Carpyus Aegyssus.
The city is an important port in antiquity, and after the Roman capture in the 1st century – the base of the northeastern Roman Empire. Procopius attributes Eggsus to the Roman fortresses restored by Emperor Justinian (527-565).
The region is the factual birthplace of the Bulgarian state south of the Danube and its first center. Throughout the existence of the medieval Bulgarian states it is an integral part of them. Then here as an outpost of Malak Preslav is built the fortress Tulitsa, which gave the name of the present town.
