Trsic – the most famous village in Serbia

In western Serbia, at 10 km. from Loznica, there is a small village Tršić. It is the birthplace of the most famous Serbian reformer Vuk Karadzic.

He was born on November 6, 1787. From this village Vuk has begun reforming the Serbian language. His house was burned by the Turks exactly ten times.Today, there is a new house in this place, like when he was a child.

He worked first in Serbia, and then he met Europe with his work and culture of the Serbs. He wrote the Serbian alphabet (azbuka) and the first Serbian dictionary.

In addition to the Vuk’s house, which was renovated in 1933, there is an ethno village with many amenities .. museums, galleries, churches and many restaurants with Serbian specialties.

During the preparation of the ethno park, special attention was dedicated to the desire to permanently mark and preserve the memory of Vuk and his work, as well as to preserve the natural environment and spatial values.

Every year, the third week in September, since 1933, the gathering of writers, students, ordinary people … is held as a cultural event of national importance and with the longest tradition.

The Serbian alphabet has 30 letters. Vuk used Adelangu’s principle in it: “write as you say, and read as it is written”.

He died in Vienna on February 7, 1864. His remains were transferred to Belgrade on October 12, 1897.

Every year, young activists and artists meet in the international volunteer work camp “Eko-kamp Tršić” and the Multimedia Art Colony, and they contribute to the improvement of the Vuk’s gender village.
