Travel guide: Aspendos Antique Theater in Side, Turkey

It is believed that the ancient Aspendos was founded in the fifth century BC by the colonists from Argos and the founder of the city is called the Mops prophet. To avoid raids from the sea, the city was built at a distance of 16 km from it, on the shore of the still navigable river Euremadon.

Now, the Aspendos name is known for its amphitheater, built in the second century and later restored by the Seljuks. The inscriptions engraved on the stone in Hellenic and Latin languages suggest that the theater was dedicated to the emperor’s family. The amphitheater of the city of Aspendos is considered best preserved to this day. Its diameter is about 100 meters, and the capacity of 17,000 people, musicians were 500 people. Amazing acoustic of the amphitheater: even a quiet whisper on the scene is heard in the most distanced rows. We did not believe the guide and checked for ourselves, this is exactly so.

It has very majestic structure. We watched there the famous show “The Fire of Anatolia” in 2006. When you sit on these ancient stone steps, heated by the sun during the day, and watch the history of Anatolia – inexpressible feeling. Now there is built a new arena for such events, there we also watched “The Fire of Anatolia” – it’s beautiful, but the effect is not the same already.
