Tips for a weekend in Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal, one of the two countries that share the Iberian peninsula, therefore quite similar, yet different to some extend. Lisbon is a port city that faces the Atlantic Ocean which makes it even more attractive place for the tourists from all around the world.

Lisbon, nicknamed as ‘The City of Seven Hills’ , ‘Queen of the Sea’ , ‘The City of Tolerance’ , ‘The City of the Light’ just to mention some of them, covers an area of 100.05 km2 which makes it the biggest Portuguese city. Lisbon is a home for about 545, 245 people and it is the most visited city in the country.

The highest point in the city is on a height of 227m, while the lowest point is on the sea level. It is a hilly city with amazing architecture, quite old buildings but well saved. It’s the city of the best Portuguese food, especially cheese and ‘bacalao’, their traditional sea dish, and an amazing high quality wine, one of the best sold worldwide.

Lisbon is the eleventh most populous urban area in the European Union. There are about 3 million people living in Lisbon Metropolitan Area, which is about 27% of the whole population.

The main reason is the views of the city that it offers. It is one of the highest points in Lisbon.

  1. Yep…very pretty…Lisbon is my home city, and until some years ago It was free for everyone, now it has an absurd price to visit. (absurd for someone who used to go there even to pass some time with friends.

  2. No, not new…some years by now.
Maybe you visited in the first Sunday of the month??

Some public touristic sites are free every first sunday of the month.

The innumerous tourists who visit it daily make it one of the busiest and most frequent places you'll see in Lisbon.

  1. Sorry, not to offend anyone but… there´s too many tourists already! Our city is getting tottaly descaracterized, lots, and lots of old stores, quite typical are closing because of the absurd rents the landloards are asking!!

    • I see what you mean but the city is so amazing that everyone wants to visit it at least once! It’s so contradictory when a city ”lives” from the tourists visits but loses its beauty when being visited by that many people…

It's a real pleasure climbing the Bairo Alto, as you can enjoy and admire the architecture, smell the spirit of the city, see and feel its history as you won't see any new or modern building.

  1. Great post.
Hope you don´t be bother by my remarks.

Lisbon is very different from what used to be when I was a student “traveling” around the city in old smoky (not anymore) buses!!

    Thank you for this.

  2. Excellent quality post, Elena! So well written, and with such great photos 🙂 Portugal is one of my absolute favourite countries, and I always enjoy Lisbon when I visit. Have you travelled elsewhere in the country?

    • Thank you for your beautiful and motivational words! So far I’ve been only to Lisbon and Sintra. However the south of the country, whole Algarve, is on my list for this summer! Do you have any recommendations for some other place to visit?

      • I spent last Christmas on the Algarve near Albufeira, and enjoyed it very much, but my real favourite area is the north, between Porto and Galicia. I walked the pilgrim route there (Camino de Santiago) a couple of years ago, and it was one of the most magical periods of my life 🙂
