Welcome to Piha Beach! “Piha!” to me sounds like “Pea Ha!”
I am not sure what the name means but reflected in this photo is “Lion Rock!” You may see some resemblance to the face of a “Lion”. To be a life guard here you need to have a Lion Heart but the local life guards are used to it.
This beach has Black or Iron Sand. Not all our beaches have black sand but black sand is mainly found on New Zealand’s West Coast beaches, and they are the main surf beaches.
This beach is far larger here and it is not only just Lion Rock but many other beautiful features.
Many people often not only try to swim here but are surfers and you can get huge waves here.
Should you come to visit, “Enjoy!” but take very good care in the water and swim between the flags.
Wonderful view of the beach. I’ve never heard of black sand
Thanks Vidocka, black sand is used to create steal from the iron inside the black sand. Ordinary sand is used to create glass.
Beautiful beach,thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Hina, glad you like Piha
i love the ocean rolling in and the gentle beach beyond.
I love this beach but the force of the current is very strong.
we’ve had that issue on some of the East Coast US beaches this year. That and the occasional (many) great white sharks right off shore.
We also get great white sharks
because of warmer waters they are closer to shore. The more the oceans warm the more the food moves to shore.
The sharks follow the food.
We have more than just white sharks as well, huge sharks ….
Thanks Doc for your kind comment.
Beautiful place indeed , thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for your kind comments Witty Feeds
In what way is the beach dangerous since you say one needs to be careful?
Several people have drowned in Piha and NZ West Coast beaches. There are rips and under currents ..The currents are very strong.
The life guards put up 2 flags to be safe, swim between them and be seen. I may put a further post about NZ beaches and being safe.
Too many people drown on our beautiful beaches, unfortunately I have seen it and it is not a pleasant sight. I hope no drowning ever happens, not one life should be lost.
Would love to visit here, looks so peaceful.
Yes, and you can hear the continual roar of the sea, it it sometimes quite loud. I love it. Thanks Carol
The picture looks like there is no beach.
I suppose I am not near the surf life guards here and I am standing at the water’s edge. thanks Alex
I don’t see the lion, but presumably this must depend on the angle you view the rock from?
Suppose it is also how you look, I guess I see it from all angles too. Thanks Indexer
