By car, the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve is located four hours southwest of Denver, Colorado. The preserve provides the visitor with a variety of ecosystems that together helped create the dunes themselves.
Sleep within view of the dunes at the Piñon Flats Campground. Pick from one of 88 different camp sites for about $20 per night. The campgrounds are in a wooded area east of the dunes. When fires are permitted, you’ll need to get you wood from the Campground store. No foraging is allowed.
The dunes themselves are approximately 1/2 mile from the campground. Plus, you’ll need to cross Medano Creek in order to get to them. The water was very low when we visited in August. Peak flow generally hits during the month of May.
For the kids, the highlight of the visit was sledding down the dunes. You can rent sleds at the Campground store, or you can bring your own.
Sounds like an exciting adventure.
