The Florida Keys or the Bahamas: Still Trying to Decide?

In case my first post wasn’t convincing enough.  Adding on to my previous post about having to make a difficult vacation choice ~ The Florida Keys or the Bahamas?  Of course, you don’t really have to choose.  They are so close to each other you could easily do both. Visit the Keys, then take a half-hour plane ride to the Bahamas. Then take another half-hour plane ride, and return back to the Florida Keys.  IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP:  Can’t stress this enough!  Be sure to plan your travel to avoid the hurricane season.

#1 Some Interesting Florida History

Henry Flagler was an investor with a vision.  He wanted to extend a railway to the upper Florida Keys all the way to the island of Key West. Even though the non-visionaries thought his idea was folly, he accomplished this engineering feat and in 1912, he made the first trip from Miami to Key West in what is known as the "Overseas Railroad".  Sadly, there was a hurricane in 1935 and in one day it destroyed 50% of the tracks and infrastructure.  But it wasn't the hurricane that took out the railway.  It was the internal combustion engine.  Highway US1 was built over the original railroad bridges.  Nowadays people can drive to Key West.

#2 Key Largo or Key West? NO NO NO! It’s Key Largo TO Key West.

You can drive down the Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West and on your way visit Islamorada, Marathon, and the Lower Keys.  Bogie & Bacall had it all and so can you!

Hidden History of the Florida Keys

#3 Conch Salad is a food of the Bahamas you must try

Whether you go to the Florida Keys or the Bahamas, you will very likely be offered conch salad.  Try it!  Very few people say they don't like it.  Most people love it!  And by the way, the recipe may say that the scotch bonnet peppers are optional.  But they're not!!  LOL.  However, the mango and pineapple additions are optional.  I grew up eating this salad without tropical fruit added.  It's great with or without.

#4 If You Just Wanted to Eat, You Could Have Stayed Home!

Yeah yeah.  I know the food on cruise ships is terrific.  But you got to get off the boat!  LOL.

Honestly, I don't know when swimming with the pigs became a “thing to do” in the Bahamas, but evidently the tourists like this!  Who knew?

The point is … there is a lot to do in order for you to make your trip a memorable one.  So have fun!

#5 Foreign Investors are Welcome in the Bahamas

Many own vacation homes or investment property in South Florida, but did you know that non-Bahamian citizens are welcome to buy property in the Bahamas.  In fact, it's the law!  Read the International Persons Landholding Act, 1993.  Maybe you can be neighbors with Oprah, or Lenny Kravitz or Shakira or J-Lo.
