The city walls of Chester

The city of Chester has the most complete set of city walls in England – although York comes close. You can walk the complete circuit of two miles apart from a few sections where repairs are currently being undertaken. There are excellent views over the city and beyond, and you can take stairways on and off the Wall at many junctures.

The lowest courses of stone date back to Roman times.

This high section of the Wall near the River Dee was built on top of a natural sandstone outcrop.

Here the Wall overlooks England's oldest racecourse on a site known as the Roodee - it held its first race in 1539.
