The Bois de Boulogne

The Bois de Boulogne in Paris, France began as a hunting ground for the Kings of France. It has now the largest place in the west of Paris where one could get some rest and relaxation. It covers 850 hectares and has lots of walkways, bridleways and cycling routes. There are nice places for picnics, children’s playgrounds, bike and boat hire, and lots of other special features.

This is the second largest park in Paris. And among its special features are:

 

The Lac Inferior is the park’s largest lake and popular with joggers running along its shores and boaters who want to get upon the lake.

Kiosk of the Emperor

There are many ducks and swans and an island which you can get to by boat only and is home to Paris’s only monument to Napoleon III who built the park. This is a small kiosk made of wood and is known as the Kiosk of the Emperor.

The Chateau de Bagatelle is surrounded by an English landscape garden. It includes a lovely rose garden which holds over nine thousand plants. Every June it is the site of the Concours International de Roses Nouvelles de Bagatelle which is the major competition of new roses in the world.  Within the garden, there are also art and sculpture exhibitions.

There is a pleasure garden and a zoo – The Jardin d’Acclimatation. Here children can enjoy the rides of an amusement park. There is also a children’s science museum and a section which has an Asian theme and features a teahouse, a lacquered bridge, and a Korean garden.

The Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil is a big complex with greenhouses. One can view around one hundred thousand plants.

The Pre-Catelan has a giant sequoia tree and a majestic copper beech. There is an old buffet and a grand restaurant and the Shakespearean Graden which contains five different natural settings which all have the bushes, flowers, and trees that were mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays.

For sports fans, there is the Hippodrome de Longchamp, the Auteuil Hippodrome for steeplechase racing and the Stade Roland Garros tennis complex.

This park even provides space for campers and there is a campground which has room for 500 tents for travelers with caravans, camping cars, and tents.
