Skin Boats at the Canadian Canoe Museum

While looking around the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Canada we found many types of Canoes that were strange at first. Not all canoes or kayaks are made of just wood, canvas or fiberglass. These were some of the first type water vessels predating the canoes of today and even the birchbark canoe. These are wood or bone framed kayaks and canoe that have stretched skin (seal or walrus) on the outside. They are super light, flexible and strong. They were made by the “First peoples” of Canada in the far North. Some are copies that are made in a more modern way.
