Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is a popular tourist attraction located at Chandigarh in India. It is a botanical garden. The vast garden is spread over thirty acres of land located in the heart of the city. Its claim to fame is 50,000 rose bushes of 1600 different species making it Asia’s largest garden. The garden was developed under the guidance and supervision of Dr. M.S.Randhawa who was the first chief commissioner of Chandigarh. The garden is named after Dr. Zakir Hussain, India’s former President and was set up in 1967.Apart from numerous varieties of roses, the garden also has various medicinal trees and shrubs. Bel, Bahera, Harar, Camphor and yellow Gulmohar are some of the medicinal trees found in the garden.
Rose Festival is an annual cultural event which is hosted atRose Garden by the end of February or in the beginning of March and is verypopular among the city residents. The three days long festival includes variousattractions like cultural performances, joy rides, food & drinks andvarious contests like photography, bonsai, landscaping, gardening and RosePrince & Princess. Over 20,000 people visit the Rose festival which iskeenly awaited by the city people.
