Which places to visit in Kato Gouves, Crete (NO vehicle needed!)

Kato Gouves is a popular seaside resort home to many apartments, villas as well as luxury hotels.If you are looking for a relaxing stay, it is a great location near many places of interest.

Hersonissos is located 7 kilometers from Gouves, Nikos Kazantzakis Heraklion Airport is located 13 kilometers away. Heraklion city is 15 kilometers away, Knossos Palace is located 22 kilometers and the city of Agios Nikolaos is approximately 45 kilometers away.

In this article we suggest a few things to do in Gouves area, for which you do NOT necessarily need a car.

So, explore the options and let us know in the comments if we have left anything out.

1. Forklore Museum of Gouves

This is a museum worth visiting if you are in the area.

It includes a collection of Cretan artifacts that were used in an agricultural household & farms.

Your visit would be of approximately one hour, and its host is great explaining about traditional Greek lifestyle.

The museum is open daily from 09:00 – 14:00

Admission is 2 euros per person.

2. Church of Saint Konstantin & Helen

A small single-nave, barrel vaulted church with two entrances: one on the south and one on the west side.

The church is made of stone and it was built with rocks, which, according to tradition, “rolled down” the mountain during a downpour.

The beautiful yard has been decorated with stone fencing and is full with tamarisks.

3. The Train Tour

A little train passes from a lot of places and allows you a fun ride for approximately 1h.

The ticket costs approximately 12 euros and is usually recommended if you have some free time to spend on a cloudy day.

And if you enjoy walking the seaside, just a couple of kilometers away you will find CretAquarium and Dinosauria Park.

4. Cretaquarium: 

Explore the Mediterranean sea and discover hundreds of species from the ocean.

From October 1st to April 30th Daily Open from 09:30 – 17:00

From May 1st till September 30th Daily Open from 09:30 – 21:00

Admission 9 Euros per person

Children 0-4 free

Children 5-17 6 Euros

5. Visit Dinosauria Park, for a prehistoric adventure

The park is open daily from 10:00 – 18:00

Closed Dates are Easter Sunday and 13th until 26th of December

Admission: 10 Euros per person

Children 0-4 free

Children 4-12 8 Euros

6. Sandy Beach

After the end of your Gouves Adventures, you may have a drink or a bite in the nice cafe’s and restaurants in Gouves and of course sit back and relax, enjoying the beautiful sandy beach of the area!
