Ohio and Erie Canal Lock

Here on a rainy day at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio between Akron and Cleveland, we see the canal museum building for the Ohio and Erie Canal.  Out front is a working lock for the canal system.  The Ohio and Erie Canal system was very active in the early 1800’s and peaked in about 1842.  By the end of the 1800’s the train systems had taken over most of the people and freight transportation and the canal system waned and was used then mostly for tourists.
