London's Tower Bridge

Completed in 1894, Tower Bridge is a bascule bridge that uses a system of counter-weights in order to raise and lower the bridge enabling large ships to pass underneath. The bridge, which took 8 years to complete, spans the River Thames.

These covered walkways enable pedestrian traffic to continue even when a ship is coming through and the bridge is up.

If you're interested in how the bridge works and how it was built, take a tour of the bridge's interior.

While originally brown in color, the bridge took on its current colors in celebration of the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.
