It can be used when you do an accidental movement, spill coffee or similar or when you would like to ask or state something.

Examples:

a. Με συγχωρείτε ! Τι ώρα είναι; [Me sinchorite! Ti ora ine?]

Excuse me!What time is it?

b. Με συγχωρείτε, δε μιλάω ελληνικά. [Me sinchorite, de milao elinika]

Yassou – Hi

Yasou" is a very commonly used phrase, used as a greeting (Hi). It roughly means 'Your health' and some times (less frequently) it can be used as a toast when drinking Cretan raki (aka tsikoudia). "Yassas" is considered to be more respectful greeting, usually used when addressing an older person or a honored guest. "Yamas" literally means "to our health" and is mostly used in the context of drinking.

  1. Excellent post! Efharisto poly 🙂

PS One thing: I’d be careful about using ‘ch’ to represent χ, as in English it is nearly always pronounced like in ‘cheese’, and you might be responsible for some very strange mispronunciations! 🙂
