Lake of the Clouds, Porcupines Mountain State Park, Michigan – 3 photos

Lake of the Clouds is located in Porcupine Mountain State Park in Upper Peninsula, Michigan. The park is located on the Lake Superior shoreline where the peninsula meets Wisconsin. The name was given to the mountains by the Ojibwa Indians who thought the mountains looked like a silhouette of a porcupine from a distance. Personally, I didn’t see it.

The park provides scenic overviews for visitors with spots to rest. Given that no matter which way we walked it was uphill – or, at least, it seemed that way – the benches were put to good use.

The photos were taken on 16 Jul 2007 using a Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera.

I used ACDSee Ultimate 2018 to adjust the lighting and boost the clarity. I also used the Dehaze filter.

I used Luminar 2018 to apply the 'Landscape (Strong)' preset (I increased the Polarizing filter a bit) and added the Accent filter, sharpened a bit and boosted the saturation.

  1. I had forgotten about the Porcupine mountains. We went there in 1978 or 1977, the big entertainment then besides hiking was watching the Black Bears at the dump.

Your images are wonderful, the memories even more so!

    • Thanks, Doc. We saw some bears in the area. There was a guy who had some steaks and was hand feeding them. We were told that the kids in the area put cookies in their mouths and let the bears take them. I didn’t see any of that.

      • My dad, I’ll have to find the pictures. we digitized all the old slides, took pictures of the black bears at the dump.

It is one of the most beautiful parks I’ve ever been to!
