Kalemegdan-Belgrade Fortress (Serbia)

He served to look at the enemy and wait for the fight. That is why his name comes from the Turkish words of the Kale – the fortress and the Megdan – the struggle.

The Belgrade Fortress is the place around which  Belgrade originated.

It was built at the beginning of the 1st century as a wooden structure for defense.

In the II century they were conquered by the Romans, and from the 6th to the 12th century it was ruled by Byzantium. From the 13th to the 15th centuries it was the center of the Serbian kingdom. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was first conquered by the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then by the Turks.

Under the agreement on the Ottoman abandonment of Serbia, on April 19, 1867, the Turks symbolically handed over the keys to the Belgrade Fortress to Prince Michael Obrenovic. Immediately after that, fortification it lost its military character, and since 1869 the whole area of the former fortress and the surrounding area began to turn into Kalemegdan Park.

1869. – Most of the fortress begins to turn into the Kalemegdan Park. 1946 – The fort was placed under the protection of the state.

The fortress is permanently open to visitors, and in its structure are: Military museum, Institute for the Protection of Monuments of the City of Belgrade, National Observatory, Museum of Natural History, Church  Ružica, Church of St. Petka, Monument ,, Winner ,, A tomb of national heroes, Large, beautifully decorated Belgrade Zoo.

Kalemegdan has 13 gates and 5 towers.

Over 115 battles fought through the impressive, impressive Kalemegdan; The fort was destroyed more than 40 times during the century.

Today, the Belgrade Fortress and the Kalemegdan Park represent a significant cultural monument, a place where numerous sports, cultural and artistic events are held, entertainment venues for all generations of Belgrade and many visitors to the city.
