In the footsteps of the great Edvard Munch

With every year the artworks of the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch become more and more popular (and more expensive!). 150th anniversary of the artist (2013) attracted the attention of his paintings’ admirers from around the world.

In what parts/cities of Norway, this event was celebrated? We can start our hike from Vågå Municipality (Oppland County), where the ancestors of Munch of the paternal line lived. The local church is especially noteworthy, because the artist repeatedly depicted it on his canvases.

Next we should go to the port city of Fredrikstad (located approximately in 100 km to the south of Oslo). It is the birthplace of the artist’s mother Laura and his aunt Karen. By the way, once it was home of the famous polar Explorer Roald Amundsen – the first man to reach the South pole (1911).

Then, in any case, we can’t deprive our attention Løten Municipality (Hedmark County), where Edvard Munch himself was born. Later he often visited this picturesque area.

And, finally, the capital of Norway – Oslo. Over time it has become the real hometown of the great painter. And one of the local landscapes (view of the Oslofjord from the hill of Ekeberg) inspired the artist to create his mega-famous painting “The Scream”.

The coastal town of Åsgårdstrand (Vestfold County) “was distinguished” by the fact that there were written some of the most famous Munch’s artworks (with unusual light effects) – “The Dance of Life”, “The Girls on the Bridge”, “Melancholy”, etc. In 1889 E. Munch became the owner of a private house in the vicinity of this town and visited it almost every summer. Currently the house is a museum dedicated to Munch and his work. Incidentally, many other Norwegian artists (Ludwig Carsten, Per Lasson Krogh, Hans Heyerdahl, etc.) also lived in Åsgårdstrand.

Kragerø Municipality (Telemark County). Local landscapes and inhabitants also inspired the artist to create some great paintings. While in Kragero, you can see the monument made in memory of Munch (it is on the main town square).

Vestby Municipality (Akershus County). There (on the shore of the Oslofjord) Munch purchased a manor, called Nedre Ramme.

Jeløya Island (the city of Moss, Østfold County). Once upon a time there was a “headquarters” of Munch. There was a studio of the artist and his artworks’ storage in his rented manor house. There, the artist painted from nature seascapes, tourists and animals from neighboring farms.
