Kalimera from the Fontana Morosini!Everybody knows this central place of our Heraklion, most of you have visited and captured this place..What may not be widely known is that this point of the city hides a big history and used to have a whole different look. Historical information reveal the existence of this very spot since the 9th century as a slave market. A few centuries later it used to be the site where the Byzantine governor would reside.During the Venetian era, the majestic 2 storey Palazzo Ducale would house the Duke and his Consiglieri right next to the Fountain. Another great building that no longer exists, was a 3 storey granary with vaulted areas. In front of it a grain market was held, and thus the old name of the square "Piazza delle Biade" (Grain Square)Unfortunately, not only human interventions but also natural disasters (i.e. a major earthquake in 1856) flattened large parts of Heraklion city, resulting to a very different appearance than what it could have been.
