DakshinaChitra Museum, Chennai

DakshinaChitra Museum is a picnic spot on the East Coast Road (ECR) south of Chennai. It takes about fifteen minutes to reach DakshinaChitra from Uthandi Toll Plaza, the southern end of Chennai city. There are many model houses resembling the actual residences found in different regions in South India. There are 4 prominent languages in South India and there is a section dedicated to each of the 4 language groups. Kerala section is very special. The one on the picture is a residence called Chikmagalur House taken from Karnataka. All the model houses found in the museum were created using materials taken from heritage houses in different regions and recreated here. There is also abundant greenery here. One can spend two hours or more inside the museum. The walk itself is a rewarding physical activity.

  1. 🙂 another great post about your home and your country. Do you have pictures of the four housing types? I should dig out my fathers pictures of the thai homes. He spent a lot of time taking pictures of the regional houses of Thailand!
