An Island Full of Snakes

Would you be terribly afraid of going to an island where the only residents were snakes? Many people fear snakes and then there are some who keep even large snakes such as boa constrictors as pets. The island is called Ilha da Queimada Grande and it is located offshore from Brazil, some 93 miles distance from downtown Sao Paulo. As far as researchers know there are between one and five snakes per square meter living there. These snakes live on lots of migratory birds that use the island as a resting place.

The most awful thing is that these snakes are a unique species of pit viper, the golden lancehead. This genus of snakes is responsible for 90% of Brazilian snakebite-related fatalities. The golden lanceheads occupying this island grow to well over half a meter long. They have a strong fast-acting poison that melts the flesh around the bites. In fact, these snakes are so dangerous that the Brazilian Navy has forbidden anyone from landing on the island.

Residents of two coastal towns near Queimada Grande love to tell two tales of horror:

One story tells of a fisherman who wandered on the island to pick bananas. Of course, he got bitten. He was still strong enough to return to his boat but then the snake venom took over. This fisherman was found on the deck of the boat in a large pool of blood.

The other story tells of the final lighthouse operator and his family. One night a bunch of snakes got in through a window and attacked the man, his wife, and their three children. They tried to escape to their boat but they were bitten by snakes that were on branches overhead.

Marco Duarte, a biologist who has visited Snake Island more than twenty times said that there may not be as many snakes as people believe but you can be sure that you’re never more than three feet away from the jaws of death.
