This is Tiritiri Matangi Island, a bird sanctuary. You can only get there by Ferry and it leaves from central Auckland and Gulf harbour.
When you go, you make sure you take your lunch with you, there is tea & coffee provided and there are Bird Guides to take you on a walking tour on one of the trails…It is an all day trip.
Well worth seeing this beautiful island.
Little effort to enjoy special beauty is worth doing, like to visit this island.

There are many islands in New Zealand and places made into bird sanctuaries, otherwise some more of our precious native birds really will become extinct. A necessary thing.
However, those in bird conservation are finding the expenses of maintaining that really a horrendous expense.

that is the issue the cost, there are a group of islands in the great lakes that the US maintains half and Canada the other half. They are amazing but very expensive.
Yes, this was expensive and it lessened the expense to have the help of many NZ volunteers.
they have many volunteers as well in the US, but the protection is what is expensive. Somebody has to watch the islands!
