Ten years of tech in 300 words or less

(picture taken in 2008)

If you consider the evolution of technology over the past three, five or even ten years, it has been pretty amazing. In fact, if we take simply the change since 2007 when the long-rumored iPhone appeared the change in both available and usable technology has been amazing. In 2007 we had Pocket PC phones, the newly launched iPhone and the initial Android phones were appearing. We had to standalone MP3 players. There hadn’t been a great tablet built at that point, but there were some pretty impressive smartpens available, In 2008 as the iPhone began to shake the market, now ten years ago, there was also the initial rise of the crowdfunding platforms.

The revolution had begun and would begin to expand rapidly. Around that 2008 period, we were also beginning to see the explosion that would be cloud and the bifurcation of the market. The change for the user was small at first. The reality of the cloud computing solutions that were being built at first made it easier for companies to build and deliver enterprise solutions. The reality of collaboration software allowed for the rise of the cloud-based GSuite and the Cloud-based Office 365. SaaS or Software as a Service allowed companies to provide the services of collaboration to their users without actually having to run and manage the physical collaboration infrastructure. No more server upgrades required, SaaS gave you an evergreen environment to work in.

There are many non-corporate changes that happened after the bursting that was cloud computing. That initial change became broader and more widespread. The reality of cloud became the explosion that is IoT. The internet of things, all the billions of connected devices that suddenly reminded us to take our pills or to wake up,  IoT generated what we now call Edge Computing. Edge is the expansion of computing to the edge of the network. Edge computing is the concept of moving computing power to the data being processed. All of this in just ten years. Ten years. One decade of change is exploding into the decade of change. Interesting times in the technology world. The question is, do you remember the phone you owned before the iPhone and Android phones took over?
