The other side of yesterday’s technology discussion Cellular Phones vs. Point and Click is the specialty camera market. As we move further and further down the path, there are many new interesting cameras and photographic areas that are expanding rapidly. I am going to bullet list the categories, and over the next few weeks, some of these are released of previous areas I’ve touched on.
- 360 Camera
- IR Camera
- High-Speed
- Stop Motion or Time-lapse
- Night Vision
I’ve spent a lot of column space on the what and how of the various technologies in the above list. Today instead I am going to break the list up a little and discuss some of the components in the list as add-ons versus standalone.
All of the above have cell phone adaptations and stand-alone versions. In all cases, the quality is what you have to consider. For most people (me included) the reality of the add-ons is that they are good enough regarding quality. That said I do have some cameras on the standalone category for some of these as well. Most point and shoot and DSLR offer high speed and time-lapse video capabilities. Night vision is a relatively interesting problem that I will lump into high speed. High-speed shutters, allow for lower light photography.
As you consider adding one of these components to your cell phone (add-on), it is important to remember what your goal is. For the most part, the add-ons for 360 Degree Cameras and IR cameras are good enough. The last three capabilities are built into the capabilities of the major cell phone cameras.
Ever since I joined the 365 Day Photo Challenge, I’ve spent a lot more time thinking about cameras.
This is an important and interesting knowledge for me, Coach!
Thanks Albert! I am glad I was able to provide useful information!
I prefer to shoot with a camera. My phone is not the latest technology.
I still much prefer taking pictures with my camera as well. I use my phone more now because of the photo challenge here on Virily. I guess I am slowly moving to using both.
I do think that camera with such features needed to capture a picture-perfect moment. I wish I can have one.
Over time I think the features will move to one device. Most likely that cell phone device, so patience!
It seems that mobile phone is quite handy now. I had some photo experiments with the use of it and the outcomes are quite impressive.
I agree, the quality of the mobile phone as a camera continues to improve. I have to say though, I still love my other cameras. Its fun to compare the two images side by side as well..
You have a point. If I have a chance, it would be nice to have a camera with high resolutions. It is picture-perfect in taking photos.
Good points here. I must admit I am a point and shoot photography and I use a DSLR camera, 2 canons, one with a telescopic lens and the other is a general canon point & shoot with some zoom. I have a lot to learn
Yet I’ve sold some of my photos.
Having enjoyed many of your pictures Pam, I would say you are without a doubt significantly better at photography than I am. You have a very gifted eye for the right picture! In your case I think you could use a pin hole camera and still get a better picture than I do!
Yet I don’t understand the technical language of cameras! I generally edit the photos on my mac book capabilities and experiement with visual effects. I do rather than understand the process of it all.
I think that is exactly the way it should be. Each of us has abilities and understanding in a specific area, the rest should just work!
Great post. But since the majority of my photos are taken at home, I use my point and shoot and Nikon separately from my phone.
I pretty much do the same thing. If I am going somewhere I know I want to remember, I always take either my Canon or my point and shoot. I do find myself at times stuck with only my cell phone, but the pictures are better now than they used to be!
I am always so amazed at how good the cell phone pics are.
I think it is an ever improving reality. Not where it will be, someday however.
Your photography posts are very helpful!
Thank you! I try to share information that I find helpful, glad to know it is useful to other people!
