Fidget Spinners: Is it really a distraction?

Fidget spinners are the new toy fad. Almost every kid I see on the street is playing with one.

What are fidget spinners?

Fidget spinners are small, ball-bearing devices that you can rotate between your fingers. I have yet to try one but some say that the momentum created provides a pleasing sensory experience. I have seen some kids try to transfer the spinner from one hand to the other while it is rotating. Initially, I thought fidget spinners were used to help people with ADHD, autism and anxiety disorders. It somehow helps them focus and keeps them calm. School just started over here and I am planning on conducting a simple research on whether this spinning thingy does improve concentration. Logic tells me that it is more of a distraction since it requires visual stimuli but I could be mistaken.

  1. It really helps some people to focus when they feel the need to move around. It probably won’t do the same for you if you don’t have that same need, but it might help to relax you when not trying to work or study.
