A MacGuffin is just a diversion. It would seem this MacGuffin was the point of the article when in truth it was the reaction to the false article that was important.
The particular actor was used because he had fallen into oblivion years before. He wasn’t well known to most people, so the item should be accepted as true, at least for a time.
Using bits and pieces pulled from various places on the web LM created an article titled : ‘NAME out of the Closet’ and posted it on Triond.
That is all LM did. Invent a story, make it seem real, and post it.
That was the parameter of the experiment.
