3 Things That You Should Know About Social Media Marketing

“If you make customers unhappy in the physical world, they might each tell 6 friends. If you make customers unhappy on the Internet, they can each tell 6,000 friends.”

Jeff Bezos, CEO at Amazon.com

The above quote from Jeff Bezos encapsulates the power of social media, in other words word of mouth referrals. Jeff is absolutely right when he says that bad publicity can spread like wildfire

On the Internet and socialmedia. However, good publicity can spread just as quickly.

So, if you think that social media marketing is just the ticket for you to marketing your business with, here are three things that you need to know – about this type of marketing – before you get started.

  • Choose your social network well

Facebook, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Twitter… There are many, many social media platforms out there and the list keeps on growing depending on the next big idea that someone gets for a platform that like-minded people can interact on digitally.

With this in mind, you need to be extremely selective about the social media platform that you choose to have your business on. In order to choose this, look at your audience and see which platform best suits this demographic. Once you’ve ascertained which social media platforms you audience hangs out on, only then start to develop a presence on this.

Remember that once you choose a particular platform, and you decide on a posting schedule, make sure that you stick to this. An inactive social media account is as damaging as no account at all. So when you decide to delve into social media, make sure that you stick to this commitment.

  • Have a social media strategy

When you want to take a journey, and you haven’t been to this place before, you punch in the address into your GPS. Alternatively, if you’re really old school you’ll look up where you’re going on a map. You do this to make sure that you know where you’re going.

Your social media strategy is the same thing as your GPS or map. It tells you where you want to get to in terms of your efforts on social media. The strategy that you develop for social media, for your business, will – most importantly – have goals. Examples of goals could look like:

  • Getting more customers to my shop
  • Getting more people to visit my website
  • Getting more people to buy my services

Once you know what your goals are, you can develop a way in order for you to get here.

  • Don’t forget your call to action

Closely linked to point 2 is the call to action. Basically, this is an action that you want people – who visit your social media page – to take after they visit your site. This is extremely important because you don’t want them to guess what you want them to do after they land on your social media page. Chances are good that they may think that you want them to do something when, in reality, you want them to do the complete opposite.

If you are a nail technician and want people to book appointments with you, make sure that at the end of every post you invite them to make bookings with you by either calling you or making an appointment online.

There is SO much more that you can learn about social media marketing. If you want to become a social media manager  or are a small business owner and want to increase you knowledge of how you can best maximise your business’ visibility on these platforms, we highly recommend that you do a social media marketing course. Alternatively, there are loads and loads of resources that you can read on the Internet which will help you to get the social media knowledge that you want!
