Julian Williams upsets Jarrett Hurd to win WBA and IBF titles

Prior to this fight, I had not ever watched a Jarrett Hurd fight, but since it was on television I decided to tune in to see what he was about. With the fight being located in Fairfax Virginia at the EagleBank Arena, which is Jarrett’s backyard he came out wearing Washington Redskins colors as well as with the Washington Redskins band escorting him to the ring.

As the boxing match started, I was enlightened on who Julian Williams was and who he fought which gave me a picture of where he fit in the division. Being that Julian’s only loss is against Jermall Charlo, I expected him to give Jarrett some sort of competition which he did.

The announcers made it clear that Jarrett was a late starter in many of his fights, which showed in this fight, but getting back into this fight was just too much for Jarrett and I would imagine that Julian scouted Jarrett’s previous fights because he was able to smother Jarrett during this entire fight and land tremendous shots in the process, along with a knockdown in the second round. This boxing match was a prime example that the crowd cannot save you once the bell rings, even if it is in your favor.

According to SB Nation: Bad left hook, Jarrett stated after the match “I definitely want the rematch. They can stitch me up right now and I could go out there and do it.”

To be fair, considering all that he lost during this fight he is deserving, but then again he did have a lot in his favor during this match yet still came up short. And Jarrett isn’t one to give rematches to those he defeats, so why should Julian give him the opportunity to gain something that he does not give others who were deserving.

  1. Unfortunately, their was a rematch clause in the contract for Hurd if he lost. He will definitely run this back immediately since he was the #1 ranked guy at 154 lbs. I am impressed by how much Williams have improved in the past couple of years. Williams might knock Hurd out in the rematch.

    • Bummer! Hope he does destroy him in the rematch because these fighters with 0 loses are ruining the sport. I can think of a number of them right now who cherry pick.
