Breaststroke – Beginner Drills

Today, I’ll be reviewing a couple of Breaststroke drills that address common problems faced by beginning swimmers. Specifically, we’ll be looking at the Corner Kick drill and the Hoop Drill.

First, many beginners have difficulty turning out their toes on Breaststroke kick. At the top of the kick, I turn my toes out before extending or thrusting my legs backwards.

In the Corner Kick drill, I position myself in the corner of the pool and use the pool walls to help remind me to turn my toes outward. Back, out, together. As I bring my heels back, I turn my foot or angle my foot so that the side of my foot is flush against the wall. Then, I push the water away and squeeze my legs together.

Another problem common to novice breaststroke swimmers is pulling past their hips. Watch as I breath late and pull past my hips. Not only is this illegal, but it hurts the timing of the stroke. In the Hoop Drill, I use the hoop as a guide for my hands. I look for my breath early, and I don’t bring my hands back any further than my chin.

Let’s watch from the side. The primary purpose of the drill is to remind the student not too pull their hands underneath their tummy. Note that my hands don’t come back any farther than my chin. If your hands are ice cream scoops, you want to eat the ice cream not smash it against your stomach.

I hope these drills help lead you to better breaststroke.
